Can Delhi Restaurants Stay Open Until 4 AM? What the 2026 Rule Actually Meant

Delhi’s decision to allow restaurants and cafés to operate until 4 AM marks a major shift for the city’s nightlife. Here’s what the new policy means for diners, restaurateurs, and the future of late-night dining.

Delhi did allow restaurants and cafés to remain open until 4 AM in July 2026.

What it did not do was give every restaurant in the capital a permanent 4 AM closing time.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, the Delhi government announced that eligible restaurants, cafés and other establishments could operate until 4 AM so football fans could gather for the overnight match. Hindustan Times.

What happened in July 2026?

On July 18, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced extended operating hours connected with the FIFA World Cup final.

The match between Argentina and Spain was scheduled to begin at 12:30 AM IST on July 20, making normal restaurant closing times difficult for venues planning public screenings. Hindustan Times.

The government said eligible establishments could welcome customers until 4 AM that weekend under Delhi’s existing 24×7 business-friendly framework. The extension was tied to a particular event.

Can every Delhi restaurant now stay open until 4 AM?

No.

The World Cup announcement should not be read as a blanket permanent closing-time rule for every restaurant, café or bar in Delhi.

Different businesses operate under different licences, permissions and regulatory conditions.

Alcohol service is also subject to separate excise requirements. Delhi’s Excise Department states that liquor-sale hours are determined through orders of the Excise Commissioner rather than automatically following general restaurant operating hours. Delhi Excise Department.

A February 2026 Delhi High Court case involving a complaint that a bar near RK Ashram Marg Metro Station was operating beyond permissible hours further illustrates that late-night operation remains subject to regulation. The court directed the Excise Commissioner to examine the complaint. The Indian Express.

What the World Cup decision did show

The temporary extension was still significant.

The chief minister explicitly linked it to the city’s 24×7 business-friendly framework and its ease-of-doing-business policy. That indicates a willingness to accommodate later operating hours for eligible businesses under particular circumstances.

But it does not mean every restaurant in Connaught Place, Khan Market, Greater Kailash or elsewhere in Delhi can automatically serve customers until 4 AM every night.

What diners should check

For customers, the practical rule is simple: check the specific restaurant’s hours before planning a very late meal.

A venue’s listed closing time, kitchen closing time and alcohol-service permissions may not be identical.

The accurate version of the story is this: Delhi permitted eligible establishments to remain open until 4 AM around the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, but that announcement was not a permanent blanket 4 AM closing rule for every restaurant in the capital.
